Choosing a domain suffix (TLD)
The most common suffix for a domain name is .com, .org or .net. However, there are various other suffixes that can be used when registering a domain name. Names that end in .gov are usually government sites, .org usually corresponds to non-profits, etc.
There are rules for registering domain names. For example, domain names that end in two letter suffixes (.ca, .uk, .jp) are known as country code top level domains. These domains usually correspond to a geographic region or country. The rules can vary when registering these types of domains, so please read your registrars rules about registering ccTLD’s.
For general registrations please be sure to stick to the standard for registering domain names:
.com - Register for any commercial use.
.net - Register for networks.
.org - Register for organizations, including non-profit organizations.
