What information do I have to provide when registering a domain name?
When a person or entity decides to register a domain name, there are some requirements for information that has to be submitted. Normally the person(s) responsible for the domain name will have their information associated with the domain name. This information is just basic contact information. Name, address, phone number, etc.
The information is made publicly available via whois records. Normally there is no way around the public disclosure of this information. Domain registrars have been providing a new service to domain registration customers called “Private Domain Registrations”. This new service removes the customers information from the public whois records and replaces it with the domain registrars information. However this service normally comes at an extra cost. Otherwise, the information in the whois records is normally used to speed up the process of providing technical help and/or dispute resolution for a domain name.
