What is a domain registrar?

ICANN is the company that maintains the database of domain names and what they map to. A registrar is usually a company that is accredited by ICANN and they are allowed to register domain names on behalf of their users. When you need to register a domain name, you go to a registrar and pay them to have the domain registered for you.
